Timken Mining Industry Application Brief

power shovel
Timken shovel solutions simplify the maintenance and operation of these equipment with a range of rolling bearings for overhead, travel, lift, push and swing mechanisms. For example, Timken has improved the transmission performance of the slewing gear by extending the service life of the lower slewing shaft. Without changing the housing size and overall width, Timken designed a bearing with a larger shaft diameter to reduce stress concentrations and extend shaft life. Customers report that shaft service life can be extended by 1.5 to 3 times with this bearing.
A power shovel contains a large number of bearings and gears, so it is important to accurately predict problems before they fail catastrophically. Timken's online intelligence systems help customers detect potential problems so they can be fixed in a timely manner, avoiding costly downtime and repairs.

Timken Solutions Success Stories:
Lower Rotary Shaft Sealed Bearing Saves Costs, Improves Productivity at Cloud Peak Energy Coal Mine
Cloud Peak Energy, headquartered in Gillette, Wyoming, USA, saves more than $35,000 per year in maintenance and grease clean-up due to the use of Timken® lower rotary shaft sealed bearings. These bearings result in a significant increase in uptime and productivity of the line bucket.
The mine's maintenance team was troubled by a grease leak from the lower rotary shaft seal bearing, and they turned to Timken for help. Timken engineers found that the grease leak also caused three other problems—premature bearing failure, the risk of damage to the slewing bracket, and grease overuse and higher cleanup costs.
Timken therefore developed the lower rotary shaft sealed bearing to solve this problem. This bearing, designed for the lower swing shaft of the CAT8750 rope bucket, is the same size as a standard bearing and requires only a labyrinth seal without any modification. This bearing integrates a sealing ring and a spherical roller bearing and uses a special multipurpose grease. This patented technology stores grease in the bearing cavity without frequent re-grease.
“Timken has been very responsive on redesigns and lead times,” said Kelvin Kennedy, an independent consultant for rope and power shovels at Cloud Peak Energy. “Their work has optimized our installation and operational processes, while Our strong relationship with Timken has allowed us to develop better overall handling and assembly techniques."

Timken Solutions Success Stories:
Out-of-the-box solutions improve conveyor performance at Boxley
In Mill Point, West Virginia, Boxley's maintenance team doesn't have to worry about unplanned conveyor downtime due to premature bearing failure. That's because the quarry had some trouble using another bearing company, and they switched to Timken® E-type housed tapered roller bearing units.
Howard Walker, director of the Mill Point quarry, said: “Older housed bearing units have an average lifespan of about 6 to 9 months in our harsh environment. We want to extend the average life of these bearings and Reduce unplanned downtime.”
Mill Point's maintenance team installed Timken's Type E housed units in the locations where failures occurred most frequently. Replacement is easy because Timken's Type E housed units are interchangeable with other brands of bearings. After testing the first few bearings, the quarry's entire conveyor line was replaced with Timken E-type housed bearing units.
